When a panel runs out of open slots, homeowners often assume the fix is a full service upgrade. Sometimes it is — but a subpanel solves the same problem for a lot less money in the right situations.
What a subpanel actually does
A subpanel is a smaller secondary panel fed from your main panel, adding breaker slots without touching your utility service size. It’s a common solution for a garage, a finished basement, or an addition where new circuits are needed but your main service still has amperage to spare.
When a subpanel is the right call
- Your main panel is full on slots but your service amperage (100A, 200A) still has real headroom.
- You’re finishing a space that needs several new circuits at once — a basement or detached garage is the classic case.
When you actually need a full upgrade instead
If your service amperage itself is maxed out — not just slots, but actual capacity — a subpanel doesn’t fix that. Adding an EV charger, a heat pump, or a hot tub on top of an already-full 100-amp service usually means the real fix is a service upgrade, not a subpanel.
