Eagan electrician — 15 min from our Saint Paul Park HQ

Eagan started as Irish and German farm country — Patrick Eagan settled here in the 1850s, and for a century it was so thick with onion fields it was briefly called the “Onion Capital.” Then I-35E and the Cedar Avenue bridge arrived around 1980, West Publishing expanded, and a quiet township of farms became a city of 65,000 in barely two decades.

A town built almost entirely after 1970

Eagan skipped the old-housing era most river towns have. Its homes tell a story of three building booms, each with its own panel and wiring quirks.

First suburban wave ('60s–'70s)

The earliest tract homes that followed the new freeways. Many still run original 100A service and aluminum branch wiring from the era — fine until a window AC, a microwave, and a space heater all want the same circuit.

The big boom ('80s–early '90s)

When townhomes, condos, and single-family neighborhoods filled in fast around West Publishing. These homes were wired 100–200A, but a thirty-year-old panel feeding a new EV charger and a heat pump is working harder than it was designed to.

Newer subdivisions ('90s–today)

Built 200A from the start with grounded outlets throughout. The capacity is there — until you stack an EV charger, a hot tub, and a battery backup, at which point even a modern panel runs out of breaker spaces.

Eagan is the kind of place where we can almost guess the panel brand from the street name and the build year. We've worked enough of these homes to know what's behind the cover before we open it.

Eagan electrical FAQ

My Eagan home is from the 1970s — what wiring should I worry about?
Homes from that first suburban wave often have aluminum branch wiring and an original 100A panel. Neither is automatically dangerous, but aluminum connections need proper handling and aging panels deserve a look. We can check it during a free in-home visit. Call 651-418-1476.
We bought an '80s townhome — is the panel big enough for an EV charger?
Often yes, but it depends on what else the panel feeds. A Level 2 charger plus central AC plus electric range can push an older 100–200A panel to its limit. We'll do a load calculation before recommending anything.
Our newer Eagan home is already 200A — why would we need an upgrade?
Most don't. But once you add an EV charger, a hot tub, a heat pump, and battery backup, even a 200A panel can run out of physical breaker space. Sometimes the fix is a subpanel, not a full service upgrade.
Who's my electric utility in Eagan, and are there rebates?
Most of Eagan is served by Dakota Electric, a member-owned cooperative, though northern Eagan is on Xcel Energy. Both offer rebates and special EV-charging rates worth checking before you install. We can point you to the current programs.
Do you cover all of Eagan?
Yes — all of Eagan, from the older neighborhoods near Cedar Grove to the newer subdivisions on the south and east sides. We're just up the river in Saint Paul Park, so it's a short trip.
How do I schedule a visit?
Call 651-418-1476 and we'll set up a free in-home quote at a time that works for you. We'll look at your panel, talk through what you're planning, and give you an honest assessment.
