Eagan electrician — 15 min from our Saint Paul Park HQ
Eagan started as Irish and German farm country — Patrick Eagan settled here in the 1850s, and for a century it was so thick with onion fields it was briefly called the “Onion Capital.” Then I-35E and the Cedar Avenue bridge arrived around 1980, West Publishing expanded, and a quiet township of farms became a city of 65,000 in barely two decades.
A town built almost entirely after 1970
Eagan skipped the old-housing era most river towns have. Its homes tell a story of three building booms, each with its own panel and wiring quirks.
First suburban wave ('60s–'70s)
The earliest tract homes that followed the new freeways. Many still run original 100A service and aluminum branch wiring from the era — fine until a window AC, a microwave, and a space heater all want the same circuit.
The big boom ('80s–early '90s)
When townhomes, condos, and single-family neighborhoods filled in fast around West Publishing. These homes were wired 100–200A, but a thirty-year-old panel feeding a new EV charger and a heat pump is working harder than it was designed to.
Newer subdivisions ('90s–today)
Built 200A from the start with grounded outlets throughout. The capacity is there — until you stack an EV charger, a hot tub, and a battery backup, at which point even a modern panel runs out of breaker spaces.
Eagan is the kind of place where we can almost guess the panel brand from the street name and the build year. We've worked enough of these homes to know what's behind the cover before we open it.
