STORM DAMAGE ELECTRICIAN
Storm Damage Isn't Always on the Roof
High winds, lightning, fallen branches, and power surges can damage your home's electrical system in ways that aren't obvious from the ground — and some of those problems get worse the longer they wait. Three Rivers Electric inspects and repairs storm-related electrical damage across the Twin Cities Metro and surrounding areas.

What We Check After a Storm
A post-storm electrical inspection is a quick visual check of the equipment most likely to take damage in high wind, lightning, or a surge. Our licensed electricians look at:
Overhead service lines
Sagging, pulled, or damaged lines and tree-contact concerns where the line attaches to your home.
Service mast & weatherhead
A bent mast, loose attachment, damaged weatherhead, or roof-penetration issues — the most common wind and branch damage we see.
Meter socket
Visible damage, loose equipment, or signs the meter base has shifted or pulled away from the house.
Main electrical panel
Tripped breakers, heat marks, burning smells, moisture intrusion, or other storm-related issues inside the panel.
Whole-home surge protection
Whether you have surge protection, whether it sacrificed itself in the storm, and whether your home would benefit from adding it.
Outdoor outlets & GFCIs
Storm-water exposure, nuisance tripping, failed covers, or unsafe exterior receptacles.
Generator connections
Transfer switch, inlet box, cords, and basic safety checks so your backup power is ready for the next outage.
Detached garage & exterior circuits
Power loss, damaged conduit, exposed wiring, or branch contact on circuits feeding garages, sheds, and yard lighting.
Even if everything looks fine from the ground, it's worth a check after high wind, lightning, or repeated power flickering — surge and connection damage often hides until it becomes a bigger problem.
🚨 Call Right Away If You Notice Any of These
Please do not touch or attempt to repair anything electrical yourself if you see:
- A downed or low-hanging power line
- A tree limb touching overhead electrical lines
- A bent service mast or damaged weatherhead
- Sparks, buzzing, or burning smells near the panel or meter
- Water near outlets, panels, or electrical equipment
- Breakers that keep tripping after the storm
- Lights flickering, dimming, or appliances acting unusual
- Outdoor outlets or GFCIs that stopped working
If a utility line is down, stay away and contact your utility company or 911 first. The utility owns the wires up to your home's service point — but the mast, weatherhead, and meter socket on your house are the homeowner's responsibility, and that's where we come in.
Do You Have Whole-Home Surge Protection?
A single surge — from lightning, a grid fault, or power being restored after an outage — can damage TVs, appliances, computers, HVAC equipment, garage door openers, and EV chargers all at once. During your storm check we'll look at your panel and tell you whether you already have whole-home surge protection, whether it appears damaged, or whether your home would benefit from adding it.

Storm Damage Electrical FAQs
Is the post-storm inspection really free?
Yes. It's a quick visual check of your service equipment, panel, and exterior electrical — no charge and no obligation. If repairs are needed, you'll get upfront pricing before any work begins.
My power flickered during the storm but everything seems fine. Should I still get checked?
It's worth it. Repeated flickering can indicate a loose service connection, and surges can quietly damage surge protectors, GFCIs, and electronics without obvious signs. A quick check rules it out.
Who fixes a damaged service mast — the utility or an electrician?
The utility repairs and reconnects their wires, but the service mast, weatherhead, and meter socket attached to your house are the homeowner's responsibility. A licensed electrician (that's us) repairs that equipment, and we coordinate with your utility on disconnect/reconnect.
Will my homeowner's insurance cover storm electrical damage?
Many policies cover storm-related electrical damage such as a bent mast or surge damage, but coverage varies. We document what we find during the inspection so you have what you need for a claim — check with your insurer on your specific policy.
Do you do the repairs too, or just the inspection?
We do the full repair: mast and weatherhead replacement, meter socket repair, panel repair or replacement, whole-home surge protection, GFCI and exterior circuit repair, and generator connections.
What areas do you serve?
