Do You Need a Panel Upgrade to Install an EV Charger?
It’s the question that stops a lot of EV-charger projects before they start: do I need to upgrade my electrical panel to install a Level 2 charger? Sometimes yes, often no. Here’s how to tell.
Two things determine the answer
A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit, usually 40–60 amps. Whether your panel can host it comes down to:
- Available capacity — does your total service (100/150/200 amps) have room for the added load, based on a load calculation?
- Open breaker slots — is there physical space for a new double-pole breaker?
If both are yes, no upgrade needed — we simply add the circuit.
When an upgrade is the right call
- Your panel is 100-amp or smaller and already busy with AC, electric appliances, etc.
- The panel is physically full — no open slots (very common)
- You have an aging or unsafe panel (Federal Pacific, Zinsco) that should be replaced anyway
- You’re planning more electrification soon (heat pump, second EV)
Ways to avoid a full upgrade
Not every tight panel needs replacing. Depending on your setup, options include a load-management device that lets the charger share capacity, or a smart charger that throttles when other big loads run.
