How Long Does an Electrical Panel Actually Last?
There’s no single expiration date stamped on an electrical panel, but panels do have a realistic service life, and several Twin Cities-specific factors shorten it.
The general range
A well-maintained modern breaker panel can last 25-40 years. Certain brands and models — Federal Pacific and Zinsco in particular — have documented failure issues regardless of age and are worth replacing on those grounds alone, not just years in service.
What actually wears out
- Breaker connections can loosen or corrode over decades of thermal cycling, especially in unfinished basements with humidity swings.
- Bus bar capacity was often undersized for today’s electric-everything homes even when the panel was installed correctly for its era.
- Code requirements — AFCI, GFCI, surge protection — have expanded significantly, and an old panel simply can’t retrofit some of these without replacement.
Age isn’t the only signal
A panel that’s tripping breakers regularly, feels warm to the touch, or shows any scorching or rust needs evaluation regardless of its age.
