Flickering Lights: When It’s Normal and When It’s a Warning Sign

Flickering Lights: When It’s Normal and When It’s a Warning Sign

Flickering lights get dismissed a lot — “old house, old wiring” — but the cause matters, because some causes are cosmetic and some are a genuine fire risk.

Usually harmless

  • A single bulb flickering: often just a loose bulb or a failing bulb itself, not the wiring.
  • Brief dimming when a large appliance starts (A/C, well pump): normal voltage draw, especially common in older homes.
  • Dimmer switches paired with LED bulbs that aren’t dimmer-compatible: a bulb/switch mismatch, not a wiring fault.

Worth investigating

  • Multiple lights flickering together across different rooms — can point to a loose connection at the panel or main service.
  • Flickering paired with a burning smell, warm switch plate, or buzzing sound — stop and call an electrician; this combination is a real warning sign.
  • Flickering that gets worse over weeks — connections that are loosening over time don’t fix themselves.

When in doubt, get it checked

Flickering by itself rarely means “call now,” but flickering combined with heat, smell, or sound always does. If you’re not sure which category you’re in, that’s exactly what a service call is for.
