Farmington electrician β€” 30 min from our Saint Paul Park HQ

Farmington began as a farming community in the 1850s, took shape around an 1865 railroad depot, and survived a great fire in 1879 that leveled much of downtown. It was even one of the first towns in the country to get rural free mail delivery, in 1897. For most of its life it stayed a small town, until the early 2000s, when it grew roughly 60 percent in seven years, and today nearly half its homes were built after 2000.

An old downtown and a brand-new north

Farmington splits cleanly along County Highway 50. South of it lies the historic downtown along the Vermillion River, with genuinely old homes. North of it lies a sea of 2000s-and-newer construction. The electrical realities on each side of that line could hardly be more different.

The historic downtown (pre-1900s)

Some of Farmington's original homes near downtown date to the 1800s. These can hide knob-and-tube remnants, fuse panels, two-prong outlets, and badly undersized service, all worth a careful inspection before adding modern loads.

Mid-century downtown homes ('50s–'70s)

Many homes near downtown date to the 1950s and the decades after. They often run on 60 to 100A service, and some hide Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels that today's electricians replace on sight.

The 2000s building boom (north of Highway 50)

This is most of modern Farmington. Built fast in the early 2000s with 200A service and copper wiring, these homes are sound, but EVs, hot tubs, and finished basements can fill a panel's spare slots quickly.

The newest northeast and Empire edge (2010s–today)

Farmington's freshest growth toward Empire Township starts strong electrically, but heat pumps, EV chargers, and battery backups are already pushing even these newer 200A panels toward capacity.

We are a Dakota County electrician based nearby in Saint Paul Park, and Farmington's split between century-old downtown homes and brand-new northern subdivisions is exactly the range we work in. Whichever side of Highway 50 you are on, we are happy to take a look and tell you straight.

Farmington electrical FAQ

I own an older home near downtown Farmington. What should I have checked?
Homes near the historic downtown can date to the 1800s or 1950s and may have knob-and-tube remnants, a fuse box, or two-prong outlets. We inspect the wiring and panel and tell you what genuinely needs attention versus what is fine.
My home is in one of the newer neighborhoods north of Highway 50. Do I still need an electrician?
Often, yes. These homes were wired well for their build year, but adding an EV charger, hot tub, heat pump, or battery can outpace the panel. We check capacity before you add, so nothing overloads.
Can a 2000s Farmington home handle an EV charger and a heat pump?
Sometimes both, sometimes not without changes. We run a load calculation first and, if needed, recommend load management or a service upgrade so everything runs safely together.
Who is the electric utility in Farmington, and are there incentives?
Farmington is served by Dakota Electric Association. They offer EV ChargeWise incentives up to $500 for off-peak charging and rebates on qualifying heat pumps. We can wire your project to fit those programs.
Do you cover all of Farmington?
Yes, the entire city, from the historic downtown south of Highway 50 to the 2000s subdivisions in the north and the newest growth toward Empire Township.
How do I schedule or get a free quote?
Call us at 651-418-1476 and we will set up a convenient time. For most projects we come out, look at the home in person, and provide a free in-home quote before any work begins.
