Is aluminum wiring dangerous — does it need to be replaced?

Aluminum branch wiring (common in homes built 1965–1973) can loosen and overheat where it connects to outlets, switches, and splices, creating a fire risk. It doesn’t always require a full rewire — approved remediation such as COPALUM crimps or AlumiConn connectors is often accepted by inspectors and insurers. Three Rivers Electric evaluates your connections and recommends remediation or replacement based on condition and cost.

How do I know if I have aluminum wiring?

Homes built between about 1965 and 1973 are the most likely candidates. You may see “AL” or “ALUMINUM” printed on the cable jacket in the panel or attic, silver-colored (rather than copper) strands at receptacles, or warm cover plates and flickering. Don’t probe live connections — a Three Rivers Electric inspection confirms it safely.

Remediation vs. full replacement — which do I need?

It depends on your wiring’s condition and your insurer. Remediation adds an approved COPALUM or AlumiConn connector (bonding a short copper “pigtail”) at every aluminum connection — usually far cheaper than a rewire and widely accepted. A full copper rewire is the permanent fix and makes sense when connections are already damaged or you’re remodeling. We’ll lay out both, honestly.

Do Minnesota insurers require aluminum wiring to be fixed?

Many do. Minnesota carriers increasingly flag aluminum branch wiring and may require documented remediation (or a full rewire) to write or renew a policy, and some surcharge for it. Proper COPALUM/AlumiConn remediation with inspection documentation typically satisfies the carrier. Three Rivers Electric provides the paperwork insurers ask for.

How much does aluminum wiring repair cost in the Twin Cities?

Approved remediation is priced per connection and is usually a fraction of a rewire, so cost scales with how many devices and junctions your home has. A full copper replacement runs $12,000–$45,000, in line with our completed Twin Cities whole-home rewire projects. If your panel is also outdated, we’ll price that together.

How does the repair process work?

We assess every accessible connection, pull the permit, and either install approved connectors at each device or run new copper circuits using low-damage “fishing” methods. We then schedule the state inspection and give you documentation for your insurer. You get a clear recommendation — remediate or replace — with a firm written price, never an upsell.

Aluminum wiring FAQ

Is aluminum wiring safe?Aluminum wire itself carries current fine; the risk is at the connections, where it loosens and overheats over time. Properly remediated with approved connectors — or replaced with copper — an aluminum-wired home can be made safe.
What are COPALUM and AlumiConn connectors? They're the two approved fixes for aluminum branch wiring. COPALUM is a permanent crimp connector (the CPSC's preferred repair) and AlumiConn is a listed set-screw connector. Both bond aluminum to a short copper “pigtail” at each device so the connection stays tight and cool.
Will my insurer accept remediation instead of a full rewire?Often, yes. Many Minnesota insurers accept documented COPALUM or AlumiConn remediation at every connection in place of a full copper rewire. We provide the inspection documentation carriers ask for; confirm your specific carrier's requirement and we'll meet it.
Is aluminum wiring illegal? No — existing aluminum branch wiring is grandfathered and isn't illegal to own. But hazardous or altered connections must be corrected to code, and most buyers, inspectors, and insurers expect it to be remediated.
Does aluminum wiring repair require a permit?Yes. Remediation and rewiring in Minnesota require an electrical permit and a state inspection. Three Rivers Electric pulls the permit and coordinates the inspection for you.
Do I need to fix aluminum wiring before selling my home? It's not legally required, but aluminum wiring almost always comes up in inspection and can stall financing or insurance. Remediating it — and having documentation — removes a common deal obstacle.
