Why this combination is different

A Level 2 EV charger typically draws 30-50 amps. A cold-climate heat pump, especially with backup electric resistance heat, can add another 30-60 amps depending on size. Stack both onto a panel that’s already running a full modern home, and a lot of older 100-amp services simply run out of headroom.

How to find out where you stand

  • A licensed electrician can calculate your home’s actual electrical load — not just guess based on panel size — and tell you exactly how much capacity is left.
  • If you know both projects are coming, it’s worth having that load calculation done before either purchase, not after the heat pump is already installed.
