What to Expect on Panel Upgrade Day: A Twin Cities Timeline
An electrical panel upgrade sounds bigger than it usually is. Most Twin Cities homes are back on power the same day, and the process follows a predictable order. Here’s what actually happens.
Before the crew arrives
We pull the permit ahead of time and confirm the utility disconnect schedule with Xcel Energy or your provider — for a full service upgrade, the utility has to physically disconnect and reconnect the meter, which we coordinate so you’re not left waiting.
The day of the upgrade
- Morning: Power is shut off at the meter. Expect to be without power for most of the day — plan around refrigerators and anything time-sensitive.
- Mid-day: The old panel comes out, the new panel and breakers go in, and every existing circuit gets landed and labeled.
- Afternoon: Utility reconnects the meter, we energize the panel, and test every circuit before we leave.
After we leave
The job isn’t done until it’s inspected. Your city or county inspector reviews the work, usually within a few business days, and we handle scheduling that inspection as part of the project — you don’t have to chase it down.
