Why Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) panels are dangerous

Federal Pacific Electric “Stab-Lok” panels were installed in millions of homes from the 1950s into the 1980s. Independent testing later showed their breakers can fail to trip during an overload or short circuit far more often than they should. A breaker that does not trip lets the circuit keep drawing current and overheat — the exact condition that starts electrical fires. Because the flaw is in the breaker design itself, there is no safe repair; the panel needs to be replaced.

Why Zinsco (and GTE-Sylvania) panels are dangerous

Zinsco panels — also sold under the GTE-Sylvania name — have a similar problem. Their breakers can melt or fuse to the bus bar, so the breaker looks like it is off while power still flows, and it may not trip during a fault. Overheating and arcing at the bus are common findings.
