Why Old Dimmers Don’t Work With LEDs
Old triac dimmers work by chopping the AC waveform — they turn off the current for a portion of each cycle, which an incandescent filament smoothly interprets as “less brightness.” LEDs don’t work that way. LED bulbs have driver electronics inside that convert AC to the DC the LED chip needs. The chopped waveform from a triac dimmer confuses the driver — it flickers, hums, or fails to start.
The fix: use a dimmer designed for LEDs. These are typically marked “LED compatible,” “ELV” (electronic low-voltage), or “forward-phase LED-rated.” They produce a cleaner waveform that LED drivers can handle. Some specialty dimmers use a different chopping technique (trailing-edge) that works even better with certain LED loads.
Picking the Right Dimmer
Brand matters less than rating. Lutron, Leviton, Cooper, and Pass & Seymour all make reliable LED-compatible dimmers. Look for the “LED” or “CFL/LED” label on the package. Cost: $25-40 per dimmer.
