When a Sub-Panel Makes Sense
Three classic situations. (1) Garage workshop with heavy 240V loads — a sub-panel in the garage shortens runs to all workshop circuits and gives you 10-20 slots to add tools without filling the main panel. (2) Finished basement remodel — basement sub-panel near the utility room reduces home-run wire counts dramatically. (3) Detached buildings (workshop, ADU, large shed) — a sub-panel in the structure with a single feeder from the main is much cleaner than 8-12 home runs through underground conduit.
Sub-panels also make sense when your main panel is at slot capacity but the actual load is fine. A 100A main with all 20 breaker slots used is full on slots — but if your house only pulls 60A peak, you have headroom on amps. Adding a sub-panel converts unused amps into usable circuit slots without the cost of a full service upgrade.
When a Full Service Upgrade Is the Right Call Instead
If your home’s actual load is approaching the main panel’s amp rating, a sub-panel doesn’t help — you’re capacity-limited at the service entrance. Signs you need a service upgrade rather than a sub-panel: the main breaker trips under heavy simultaneous load (AC + dryer + oven + EV charger), the load calculation comes out over 100A, you’re adding a hot tub plus an EV charger plus an electric range simultaneously, or you have any 60A panel still in service.

Sizing a Sub-Panel for Your Needs

The amp rating determines how much load the sub-panel can handle simultaneously. The slot count determines how many circuits you can run from it.
