Single-tool 120V circuits (15-20A): every individual hand tool plus moderate stationary tools — drill press, scroll saw, bench grinder, small belt sander, router table, miter saw. Multi-tool 120V circuits (20A dedicated): table saw, planer, jointer, dust collector — all need their own circuits because they’re often run simultaneously with hand tools. Typical small workshop plan: 4-6 dedicated 20A circuits across the workshop.
240V circuits (30-50A): tools that pull serious current — larger table saws (3HP+), cabinet saws, larger planers, larger dust collectors, welders (TIG/MIG), compressors over 5HP. Most home shops need 1-2 dedicated 240V circuits. If you’re going to weld, plan for a dedicated 50A/240V welder circuit regardless of which welder you have today.
Lighting, Outlets, and the Layout Question
Lighting for a 2-car garage workshop: 8000-12000 lumens minimum for color-true work. LED shop lights at 4000-5000K give better color rendering than the old fluorescent shop tubes.
