Maplewood electrician β€” 22 min from our Saint Paul Park HQ

Maplewood started as truck farms and dairy land in the New Canada and McLean townships, shipping produce to the St. Paul markets. Then 3M chose the open, low-tax land for its new campus in 1952, and returning veterans filled in neighborhoods like Gladstone and Hazelwood. The town incorporated in 1957 with 14,000 people, having grown from farmland to suburb in barely a decade.

The farm town that 3M turned into a suburb

Drive through Maplewood and you can read its growth in the wiring. A few old farmhouse-era homes near Gladstone, wave after wave of postwar ramblers around the 3M years, and newer construction out toward the mall. Each era left behind a different electrical panel and a different set of headaches.

Gladstone-era and farmstead homes (pre-1950)

The oldest pockets near Gladstone date to the railroad-shop days and the truck-farming decades. These homes often still carry fuse panels, two-prong ungrounded outlets, and the occasional run of knob-and-tube tucked behind plaster from a long-ago remodel.

Postwar 3M ramblers ('50s–'60s)

The houses that filled in when 3M arrived and veterans came home. Many still run on 60–100A service that was plenty for a 1958 kitchen, and some hide Federal Pacific or Zinsco panels that today's electricians replace on sight for safety.

Mall-era and split-levels ('70s–'80s)

As Maplewood Mall opened in 1974 and the city kept growing, builders went up with split-levels and larger homes. Watch for aluminum branch wiring from this stretch, and aging 100A panels that trip when the AC and an EV charger run at once.

Newer construction (1990s–today)

Homes built since the '90s usually came with 200A service, but heat pumps, hot tubs, EV chargers, and battery storage stack up fast. Plenty of these panels are closer to full than their owners realize.

We are based down in Saint Paul Park, so Maplewood is a bit of a drive for us, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we can say is that we have worked on every one of these housing types up and down the metro, from fuse-box farmhouses to packed 200A panels, and we are glad to come take a look.

Maplewood electrical FAQ

My Maplewood home is from the 3M-boom years. How do I know if my panel is a safety problem?
Look for the brand names Federal Pacific (often labeled Stab-Lok) or Zinsco on the panel door. Both are known to fail to trip properly and we replace them on sight. If you see one, call us at 651-418-1476 and we will assess it.
Does my 1970s split-level have aluminum wiring, and is that dangerous?
A fair number of homes wired in the late '60s through '70s used aluminum branch circuits. It is not automatically a hazard, but the connections need proper treatment. We can inspect outlets and panels and tell you exactly what you are working with.
We added an EV charger and now the breaker trips when the AC runs. What is happening?
That is a classic sign your panel is at capacity, common on aging 100A services. The fix is usually a service upgrade, often to 200A. We will calculate your actual load and recommend the right size, not just the biggest.
Who is my electric utility in Maplewood, and are there rebates?
Most of Maplewood is served by Xcel Energy, though a limited area is served by North St. Paul's municipal utility. Xcel offers rebates on efficiency upgrades and electrification; we will point you to the current programs that apply to your project.
Do you cover all of Maplewood?
Yes, all of it, from Gladstone and the older north end down through Hazelwood and out toward Maplewood Mall and the 3M campus area. No neighborhood is off the map for us.
How do I schedule, and is the quote really free?
Call 651-418-1476 to set up a visit. We come out, look at your actual home and panel, and give you a free in-home quote with no obligation. You will know your options before any work begins.
