Do I need a 200-amp service upgrade?

200-amp service is today’s standard. You likely need one if you are adding a large load — an EV charger, central AC, electric range or dryer, hot tub, heat pump — or a room addition, or if your panel is full or a Federal Pacific or Zinsco. A licensed load calculation tells you for sure, and we do it free.

Signs your electrical service is undersized

Watch for lights that dim when the furnace, AC, or a big appliance kicks on; breakers that trip under normal use; a 60- or 100-amp main in a home with modern loads; reliance on power strips and extension cords; and a panel with no room for new circuits. Any of these is worth a professional assessment.

What a 200-amp upgrade includes

A proper service upgrade replaces the whole service entrance: the mast/riser, meter socket, main panel, and grounding, sized to 200 amps. Minnesota’s 2023 code adds a whole-home surge protector and an outdoor emergency shutoff. We handle the panel work and coordinate the Xcel disconnect and reconnect end to end. See our electrical panel upgrade page for details.

Permit, inspection & the Xcel rebate

Every service upgrade in Minnesota is permitted and inspected — we pull the permit and schedule the state or city inspection. Because it changes your service capacity, Xcel coordinates the disconnect and reconnect. And Xcel offers up to a $1,500 rebate for upgrading amperage; we file it for you. Frequently asked questions

How much does a 200-amp service upgrade cost in the Twin Cities? In the Twin Cities, upgrading from 100-amp to 200-amp service typically costs $7,700 to $9,500 installed — including the new panel, meter socket, grounding, a code-required whole-home surge protector, and Xcel coordination. A 150-amp upgrade runs about $8,100; 320 and 400-amp services are higher. We give a firm written quote after a free on-site assessment.
Do I need to upgrade to 200-amp service? You likely need a 200-amp upgrade if you are adding an EV charger, central AC, electric range, hot tub, heat pump, or an addition — or if your panel is full, undersized, or a Federal Pacific or Zinsco. A licensed load calculation confirms it, and Three Rivers Electric does this free before you commit to anything.
Is 100-amp service enough for my home? For a smaller Twin Cities home with gas heat and appliances, 100-amp service is often fine. But modern electric loads can max it out fast. If your lights dim when big appliances start, breakers trip under normal use, or your panel has no open spaces, it is time to consider 200-amp service. We can measure your actual demand.
Do I need a 200-amp upgrade to install an EV charger? Not always. Many homes with 200-amp service can add a Level 2 EV charger without upgrading. If you have 100-amp service or a full panel, an upgrade — or a load-management device — is usually needed. We run a load calculation first, so you only upgrade if you truly need to. See our EV charger installation page.
Does a service upgrade require a permit and Xcel coordination?Yes. A service upgrade in Minnesota requires an electrical permit and inspection and must meet the 2023 code, which now includes an outdoor emergency disconnect and whole-home surge protection. Xcel disconnects and reconnects the service. Three Rivers Electric pulls the permit and coordinates the Xcel scheduling for you.
Is there a rebate for upgrading my electrical service?Often, yes. Xcel Energy offers up to a $1,500 rebate for upgrading to a higher-amperage panel with a licensed electrician, and more incentives can apply when the upgrade supports an EV charger or heat pump. We file the paperwork. See our Minnesota electrical rebates page for what is active now.
How long does a 200-amp service upgrade take?A standard 200-amp upgrade takes most of one day, about 4 to 8 hours of work. Your power is off for part of that time while Xcel disconnects and reconnects the service and the inspector signs off. We schedule the Xcel coordination so you are without power as briefly as possible.
