Level 1 vs Level 2 EV Charging at Home: What Twin Cities Drivers Should Know
Bought an EV, or about to? One of the first questions is how you’ll charge it at home. In Minnesota, where winter range matters, the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 charging is bigger than most new owners expect.
Level 1: the charger in the box
Level 1 is the cord that comes with your car, plugged into a standard 120-volt outlet. It works — but slowly, adding roughly 3–5 miles of range per hour. Overnight that’s about 30–50 miles. For a short commute and a car that sits all night, it can be enough in summer.
The catch in Minnesota: cold weather cuts EV range and adds battery-conditioning load, so Level 1 often can’t fully recover a day’s driving in winter.
Level 2: the home-charging standard
Level 2 runs on a 240-volt circuit — the same kind of power as your electric dryer or range — and charges 5–9 times faster, typically adding 20–40+ miles of range per hour. Most EVs go from nearly empty to full overnight. For nearly every Twin Cities household, Level 2 is the right answer.

What a Level 2 install involves
We run a dedicated 240-volt circuit from your panel to the charger location (garage, driveway, or carport), mount and connect a hardwired unit or a 14-50 outlet, and pull the permit. The main variables are the distance from your panel and whether your panel has capacity and an open slot — if it’s full, you may need a panel upgrade first.
